Jalantari 4.0: Six Guardians of Nusantara
Jalantari 4.0: Six Guardians of Nusantara is the fourth chapter in Tarianja Dance Studio’s ongoing Jalantari series, and from the very beginning it carries that quality of depth. It does not simply continue what came before; it deepens it, reaching further into the question that has always animated this series: What does it mean to walk the path of dance with integrity, with devotion, with cultural awareness?
Each edition of Jalantari has been a gathering — of movement, of memory, of meaning. The first three chapters laid down roots, establishing a practice of serious artistic inquiry that brings together classical ballet, contemporary movement, and the rich vocabulary of Indonesian traditional dance. Jalantari 4.0 grows from those roots, shaped by everything the studio has learned and everything it still wishes to understand. It is a production that listens before it speaks.

Six Guardians of Nusantara: The Creative Vision
The concept at the heart of Jalantari 4.0 is both ancient and urgent. The Indonesian archipelago — Nusantara — is one of the most culturally diverse places on earth: thousands of islands, hundreds of living traditions, each with its own movement language, its own stories, its own way of understanding the relationship between body and world. To speak of guardians in this context is to speak of responsibility. The six figures at the center of this production each carry a distinct cultural inheritance, and together they ask: who holds the thread between the past and the present? Who keeps the knowledge alive?
The choreographic vision does not answer this question directly — it lives inside it. Rather than presenting Indonesian cultural heritage as something fixed and museum-bound, Jalantari 4.0 treats it as something breathing, something that changes as it is carried. Each guardian embodies a different relationship to tradition: reverence, tension, tenderness, grief, pride, renewal. Watching them together, one feels the full weight and beauty of what it means to inherit a culture — and the particular kind of courage it takes to carry it forward into an uncertain present.
The Choreographic Conversation
On December 20, 2025, Tarianja Dance Studio presented Jalantari 4.0: Six Guardians of Nusantara at Gedung Mayang Sunda. This performance began with a simple question: in a world where everything seems to be falling apart, who will protect our nature?
Indonesia has its own stories of guardians. Across the archipelago, myths tell us about figures who protect the land, the harvest, the forests, and the balance of life. Through Jalantari 4.0, we wanted to bring these stories back into our imagination. But beyond remembering the guardians of our ancestors, we also wanted to ask ourselves: should we not become guardians too?

The Dancers’ Journey
The six guardians were inspired by figures from different regions of Indonesia, including Dewi Sri, Lumimuut, and Naga Besukih. Each character carries a different cultural story, yet they come together in one shared narrative about nature and our responsibility to protect it.
The creative process took approximately four months. We worked together to select the music, and some of the original compositions were developed in collaboration with our composer, Rizaldy, S.Sn. One of the challenges was bringing the costumes together within a limited budget while ensuring that each guardian could still represent the cultural identity of their respective region.
A Meeting Point: Dance, Culture, and Community
This year’s Jalantari involved more than 100 dancers. Working with such a large ensemble required us to be more aware of every detail, from the movement of each dancer to the transitions between scenes. It was a process that taught us how important communication, patience, and collective responsibility are in creating a performance.
For me, Jalantari 4.0 is a reminder that culture is not only something we inherit, but also something we must continue to care for. Our stories, our bodies, and our natural surroundings are all part of the same living heritage. Through dance, we hope to keep these stories moving, while inviting ourselves and our audience to become more aware of the world we share.
Jalantari 4.0 is now part of Tarianja’s artistic archive — a record of our ongoing journey to explore Indonesian culture through movement, imagination, and collective creation.

Archived in Movement
Jalantari 4.0: Six Guardians of Nusantara now takes its place in Tarianja Dance Studio’s growing artistic archive — not as a closed chapter, but as a living record. Every production in the Jalantari series has added something to the studio’s understanding of what it means to make dance that is both artistically rigorous and culturally grounded. This fourth edition deepens that commitment: to Indonesian heritage, to the craft of choreography, to the community of dancers and audiences who make this work possible.
An archive is not a storage room. It is a conversation across time — between what has been made and what is yet to come, between the dancers who performed these pieces and those who will one day inherit them. To place Jalantari 4.0 in the archive is to say: this mattered. This was made with care. And wherever the studio goes next, it will carry this with it.
